Sonya Vine is an artist from Haslemere who is inspired by strong light, everyday moments and human experience. She often paints people in silhouette with light and dark to create evocative scenes.

She graduated from Cheltenham Art College in 1992 with a 2:1 BA Hons Degree in Fine Art Painting and has had many solo and joint exhibitions. In 2023 she was shortlisted and placed Runner Up in Surrey Artist of the Year. Sonya enjoys painting large oils and in lockdown found the joy in small acrylics including a collection of monochrome paintings.

WORKSHOP DETAILS

Information about the day

In this workshop you will create an atmospheric monochrome painting using just two tubes of paint – white and one other of your choice.

Taking away colour decisions will help to focus on the light and dark. Reference photos with strong light work best but don’t worry if you don’t have one, Sonya will bring in a selection.

By the end of the day you will have completed a beautiful monochrome painting and never once worried about colour. Experience the freedom of reducing your palette to one colour!

Materials to bring

Primed canvas or board. Depending on how quick you work you can bring a couple.
Palette
Paint – Sonya will be working in oil. You may use acrylic if you’d prefer but, due to the fast drying, it’s best to also bring an extender eg GAC100 so you’re able to move the paint around. Please bring white and another colour, preferably fairly dark. Black is great if you’d like to do a black and white painting. Burnt Sienna will give a lovely rich sepia look. Anything goes – red, green, blue… but no lighter than orange to get the most out of the lights and darks.
Odourless Mineral Spirit in container (if using oil) or jar for water (if using acrylic)
Paintbrushes – various sizes
Rags – this could be old sheets or clothes, anything you’re happy to wipe the painting with. Alternatively you could bring paper towel. Sonya will have some spare.
