MARCH 2026 -
Judit Matthews - Pen & Ink hare with collage & watercolour
We had a very good attendance for our March demonstration, which was Judit Matthews showing us how she creates her illustrations using pen and ink, watercolour and collage. Her works involve many layers and include both hand made and pre-printed paper collage. Judit has the knack of being able to chat whilst working and came out with many tales, not just about her art but also her life journey, which began in Hungary. She demonstrated her technique working on three images at various stages of completion. She uses a limited pallet to achieve a subtle blend of light and shade and proved that you don’t have to spend a lot on materials to create wonderful artworks. A thoroughly informative and entertaining session.

amanda wilsher - sea glass jewellery
Amanda combs the beach near her home for tiny pieces of broken glass that have been churned by the waves and turns them into stunning pieces of jewellery. The glass appears frosted as it has been eroded by sand and sea, but comes to life when set in silver. Amanda showed a fascinated audience how the silver is moulded to the glass to form pendants and earrings. The “magic” as with a little heat the silver flows to form a solid bond, and then the painstaking operation to clean the piece to get it to its finished state. The images below show Amanda at work and selection of her creations.
For our first demonstration of the new year we had the delightful Kate Alger demonstrating the art of printmaking using tetra packs. These are the containers that are used to store various liquids in our supermarkets. They are principally made of cardboard, but the inside face is a very thin metallic layer. This makes a perfect medium for printmaking, being relatively easy to mark with a sharp pointed scribing tool or to remove the foil using a palette knife. Kate demonstrated making a plate by tracing on the image of a cat using carbon paper and then scribing the foil. The whole plate was then inked and the areas where no ink was needed cleaned away before passing the place through a press to transfer the image onto paper. Kate is running a workshop on this technique later in the year. Visit our workshops page for details.

JULY 2025 -HEATH POND, PETERSFIELD
Images from the recent sketch out held at the Heath Pond, Petersfield. Whilst the morning threatened heavy showers, the afternoon was much more conducive to a bit of sketching and the group had plenty of subjects to study and capture.
