Linda Mills has been working with willow since 2004 when she initially attended a taster day at West Dean College near Chichester to make some willow platters and thoroughly enjoyed it. She decided she wanted to learn more and booked the next course immediately. After attending various day and  longer courses with a selection of tutors making frame baskets, bird and animal sculptures and Christmas trees, Linda moved on to learning to make traditional baskets as most people recognise them.  She makes a range of baskets and willow sculptures of small animals and birds. Some baskets contain other materials such as sea shells, shotgun cartridges and silver birch using some of the 350 varieties of willow grown in Somerset, Dorset and Hampshire.

By 2009 she started attending events selling baskets and by 2013 gave up her previous career to become a full-time basket maker. It was also then that workshops started to be run. Mainly outdoor events are now attended where demonstrations can take place during the day. She lives in Emsworth and attends Emsworth Arts Trail and is an Emsworth Artist. The Emsworth Artists Summer Exhibition is once a year for 5 days over August bank Holiday starting with a preview on the Friday evening then open from Saturday till Wednesday.

Materials to bring

All tools and materials required on the day will be provided.  Basket making tools are very simple and very sharp. For this reason,  please wear closed shoes. Participants  attending will be well spaced out to prevent eye injuries.

Information about the day

On the day of the PACS workshop Linda will be giving instructions to a small group of members on how to construct their own Willow Christmas Tree. Our output will be useful for the seasonal activities at the end of the year.

During this one day workshop you will make a willow Christmas tree between 18 and 22 inches tall as seen in the photograph. There are 350 varieties of willow and you will use a mixture of different varieties because trees with mixed colours look very nice.
