Fiona Hooper Workshop – 12th July 2025

Landscape in Oils - with knives

Fiona Hooper was born in Bristol, UK

Fiona’s passion lies in painting landscapes in her distinctive and contemporary style. She works predominantly in oils using a painting knife, to capture the peace and tranquillity of the wild, natural places that she loves to discover. Exploring and visiting these places is an excellent way of recharging her mental ‘batteries’.  Recently she has also been incorporating gold and silver leaf in her paintings.
Wherever possible Fiona likes to work directly from the subject, painting in the open air in the places that she loves, interpreting the sights, sounds and smells in paint on canvas. But, when this is not possible, her sketches, photographs, and memories act as the inspiration for her paintings.
Her work has won awards and critical acclaim and can be found in collections both in the UK and internationally, including the USA, Canada, France, Ireland, Malta, Australia, and Switzerland.
Fiona lives & works in West Sussex, UK, where she is often to be found on location with her easel and paints, and her travels – which have spanned the globe – have also been a rich source of subject matter.
Fiona is also an accomplished professional portrait artist, having completed many successful commissions of both people and animals.

WORKSHOP DETAILS

Outline of the workshop on the 12th July:

Fiona will be introducing us to oil painting with knives.
Fiona will bring a reference image with her for her own demo-painting and would suggest that participants choose an image to work from that inspires them but is not too complex. She will, however, bring some additional images with her that people may choose to use (they can photo them on their phones if they don’t finish their painting during the workshop).

Materials to Bring:

Oil paints, canvas and knife details will be supplied to all booked participants about a month or so before the workshop on the 12th July.

Oil paints from tubes are best for this event. Attendees wishing to use Acrylics instead of oils should note that because of rapid drying times, they will have difficulty in achieving the levels of texture which can be achieved with knives and oils.  They should consider buying 5 tubes of cheap oil paints (a red, a blue and a yellow, plus raw umber and white – choosing the red, blue and yellow to suit their subject).  A less satisfactory alternative would be to use water misters and Acrylic retarding agents.

All should use Zest-It as a brush cleaner to avoid toxic solvents on the day. No other volatile solvents will be allowed on the day.
