May workshop with Will Dyke – a review of this exciting session!

Our May workshop was a huge success! Here’s a review written by Lousie Turpin who attended the session.

Will Dyke – Trees and woodland

Lino and woodcut printing workshop

The morning of the Royal Wedding dawned bright and sunny and 16 PACS printmakers were headed, not to Windsor, but the Triangle Centre in Liss. We were there for the Will Dyke printmaking workshop. Many of us were returnees from his Farmyard session in 2017 which goes to show how much we had enjoyed his last visit.

After a demonstration of how to use both the lino and wood cutting tools, along with instruction on the variety of marks and textures possible in these media, we were off to experiment with our own sample piece with a warning from Will to “Always place your cutting hand in front of the anchoring hand” – the tools are sharp and all limbs were preferred unscathed by the end of the day, it seems!

Once we got the hang of the tools, Will showed us how to ink up our lino and wood effectively, how to place lino squarely on the paper and how to burnish the back of the paper to give an even coverage of the ink.

Then it was time to create our own masterpieces using the reference supplied or any that we had brought with us. Coffees and teas were purchased along with sustaining cake and all went quiet for an hour or so! Will was on hand to offer any advice needed. Beautiful designs began to emerge from the hitherto blank squares and it was on to the printing table to proof up our masterpieces.

Once the proofs were created on newsprint and adjustments made, final prints were made on thicker paper. Throughout the day we experimented with printing designs as a single colour, using multiple coloured inks on one image, printing on a variety of coloured papers and the bold amongst us ventured into reduction printing.

Come 4 o’clock, the bride and groom in Windsor were tucking into their wedding breakfast whilst we were packing up the hall. A large haul of wonderful prints were on display and everyone was able to take home some very lovely artworks. A great day was had by all. There were many requests to invite Will back so let’s hope we see him again soon.
